Davo. I appreciate your concerns as this is a perplexing area. Whilst I have been in the tax game for over 30 years, I thought it would be remiss if I didn't offer some minimal advice - and I did state that readers should consult their own accountant, as each individual's circumstances are different.
I think we will have to agree to disagree on whether you can be both a trader and an investor. There is no definition in the Act, and each case is assessed on its merits. I would hate to think that just because I have traded specs within this one year, that I would be precluded from claiming a capital gains reduction on a long-term dividend yielding blue chip share I may have held for 15 years.
Might bring this up as a topic for next weekend's dt forum.
