Well, its not my specialty, but my understanding of wave theory suggests that fibre optics *are* the answer to the problem. Its like building a road through a forest, in terms of what we will lose in signal strength over distance.
Similarly it is possible to transmit power through the air its better through a wire. You get the idea. A slippery slide vs sliding down a sand dune or the edge of a mountain.
Never say never, but it is unlikely that we can ever transmit signals better through the air, than through a medium like fibre or copper. Unless we discover a new type of method of transmitting data altogether (outside of the EM spectrum).
