    The network needs apples and oranges to operate at the same speed or a link gets slowed to the minimum speed.

    Evans believes that by 2020, when 5G will come online globally, some 50 billion “things” will be connected. Think of self-driving cars that have capabilities to communicate with traffic lights, smart city sensor systems, savvy home appliances, industrial automation systems, connected health innovations, personal drones, robots and more.

    All of these things will need to connect wirelessly to the internet.

    “5G will make the internet of things more effective, more efficient from a spectral efficiency standpoint,” said Evans. “Each IOT device and network will use exactly and only what it needs and when it needs it, as opposed to just what’s available.”

    4G standard is up to 1GB
    5G standard is minimum 1GB per channel . With wireless u get allocated a radio frequency channel that has 1GB bandwidth and there is only a certain number of channels in the base station. The system is limited by the size of backhaul links back to the network. These could be fibre or radio links. Updating the size of the backhaul links is another major task. With the right capacity of backhaul links and right number of radio channels there is no degradation of service on mobile broadband.

    The telecoms networks usually have redundant paths and redundant equipment.
    Telstra has had major links in both radio and fiber as when it was the National carrier it was for National Security. All the equipment was duplicated and automatically set up for switch over in case one part failed. This included batteries rectifiers computers other modules, transmission links.

    With fiber it is also limited by capacity of the Multiplex equipment that hangs of it, at the exchange end. That MUX equipment determines the number of 1Gbps channels on the fibre. - so if too many people get on it will be limited - especially since part of the revised NGN is the old copper wires to the house. If 1000 subs get multiplexed on the fiber link with a bandwidth capacity of 10GB then each gets 10MB bandwidth. So it depends on the network planners.

    So they both - radio and fiber can be limited by the capacity of the link - except technically the radio channel is not limited, because u either get connected to a radio channel that has 1GB bandwidth or u don't. (whereas with fibre they can demux u down in speed ) - only the fiber(or radio) link backhaul to the network is the limiting factor- But ideally they continually upgrade the capacity of the links so as there is no limitation. eg u will need as many 1GB fibre links back to the exchange network as 1GB radio channels in the mobile base station

    Networks will always have fibre and radio as redundant paths. Even the fiber is looped so as if a section gets chopped by a backhoe another section takes over.

    The 50 billion things of internet of things is totally dependent on 5G mobile wireless and it being designed to switch between things and paths so as not to do what u say in limiting speeds of wireless.
