Generally the share price will fall by the amount of the dividend when it goes ex-dividend. It is possible it could fall even more in Oz due to franking credit effect, but the 45 day rule probably limits that.
So buying on the record date and selling on the ex-div date will, on average, generate a capital loss offset by an income. Generally not a tax favourable manoeuvre.
