Now there is talk about sodium based batteries with up to 10x the energy density of Li cells. It's easy to see a situation where massive supply capacity suddenly becomes largely irrelevant in a very short time.

With billions being spent on battery research, it would be a brave person to double down on what may only be a relatively short lived battery technology (imho).

True, but you forget that developing a new technology requires investment and years of R+D. Once developed companies interested would need to invest heavily to catch up with industries which are years ahead with the "old" technology. It's not that cut and dry.
