Yeah - Dr Wright is a freshwater ecologist, not an engineer. We don't ask engineers to give opinions about aquatic life and Dr Wright can't make sweeping statements about pipeline engineering. He worked for Sydney Water as a consulting ecologist, not everyone who works for Sydney Water is a pipeline engineer.
Many other errors of fact in that ABC article, the most amusing was the photos of the farmers in front the Belubla River - no mention of the cattle grazing on the property or the pesticides or fertilizer load from improved pastures, and if they don't want stock quality water in pipelines on their property, then they had better rip out all their own bores and waterlines which also contain stock quality water, and try farming without that.
Typical ABC reporting, any water that has been sitting around or adjacent to a coal mine is instantly "contaminated" but apparently farming and agriculture practices never release any sediments or fertilizer into the surface water stream, and is always "pristine" quality.
