Ultimately I don't think they are too concerned about the price they pay to do this. The margins are good the entire way through the supply chain, they could over-pay in securing up the supply chain and still make a bucket load... no one loses really, but if they fail to secure reliable supply chains - then their business is done and dusted.
Why spill the beans to their competitor though? My guess - If VW are saying they are thinking about it, they have effectively already done it / are about to do it. Does that include E25? No idea but we know this stacks up on paper and I expect the entire market to head this direction.
One thing that has never really mentioned here - and probably because the fair value / NPV is so good anyway - is the potential for trading on hype. If Tesla and VW start getting in bidding wars etc. then the hype valuations come. Who knows what is possible if that was to happen.
