One area that is worth noting in terms of alternative energies is the time to bring them to market. One of the most respected authors on this topic - Vaclav Smil;

I am all for alternative energy sources and believe the quick fix globally to meet the ~28% reduction by 2030 would be to get off of Coal, our addiction to Oil will still take some time. It certainly will be an interesting 2 weeks.
