Hard rock hopefuls
There are about 50 ASX-listed companies that have seized on the window of opportunity that exists for near-term term hard-rock supplies of lithium to meet the rise of a battery powered world.
It is a window of opportunity because there is an acceptance that over time, the demand in growth for lithium will be comfortably met by expansions at the existing hard-rock producers, and the brine-based producers in South America. By extension, there has to be an acceptance that of the 50 ASX-listed hopefuls in the hard rock lithium space, we will be lucky to see a handful of them get in to production this side of 2025, if not 2030.
Apart from the couple that are already hard rock producers (Mineral Resources, Galaxy and Neometals ), the weight of money suggests Pilbara Minerals (PLS) and Kidman (KDR) are two that will make the cut among the developers/explorers, with the latter now not far off confirming its Mount Holland discovery is mind bendingly big with the release of the a maiden resource estimate.
But what of the ASX-listed contenders with overseas projects? Among all of them, it is Birimian (BGS) , which gets to stake its claim to be a serious contender to make it through the window of opportunity with the expected release soon of its maiden resource estimate for its Bougouni lithium project in southern Mali.
It is eagerly awaited because of all of the projects coming forward, Bougouni looks as if grade will be something special when viewed against the rest (drilling to date has a weighted average of about 1.7 per lithium oxide). The resource is also shallow and well placed when it comes to supporting infrastructure.
The stock last traded at 33c for a market cap of $60m. But as much as $40m of that could be knocked off that for the value of its Massigui gold project which takes in three gold deposits containing some 400,000 ounces of gold within 25km of Rangold’s Morila gold project in Mali, which is running short of ore. A potential deal (toll treatment or sale) with Rangold would further elevate Birimian’s lithium credentials.
