Mate, i sincerely do not think that the general market will have as much an effect as you think it does with small cap plays. In the past few months, there have been numerous firms that have increased 500% - 1000% on positive announcements. It is the so called blue chip plays that have taken a beating and reduced mutual funds %s throughout.
With volatile markets such as these, it is all about stock picking. Plain and simple. With a bit of due diligence and understanding the relevant sectors that certain firms are involved in, and positioning oneself prior to possible positive announcements, one can make a lot of money.
I have been in this line for ages and am quite happy to see the market volatilites such as these...it seperates the men from the boys. Ultimately, the individuals who take a bit of risk and not follow the herd make the money. This wisdom comes from experience.
Final note - Money never dies...it just gets transferred from one to another. With that in mind, i am wondering where the trillions of dollars are changing hands to?....
