"this is pretty damn stupid isnt it? hanging fibre optic on poles in a cyclone vulnerable area?"

Why do they string power lines in a cyclone vulnerable area.

Answer its a hell of alot cheaper than burying them in the ground.

Now fibre optic cabling isn't very expensive and will be quite cheap to restring on poles , a hell of alot cheaper than replacing the power lines.

Replacing it every now and again after a the odd large cyclone whilst replacing damaged power lines will again be cheaper in the long run than burying it over hundreds of km's

Wow a massive cyclone damage infrastucture , roads , hospitals , gas, electricity etc etc , Suprise Suprise it damaged communications as well , wonder if the copper network was affected?
You people are pathetic using anything you can to attack the government and de-value the NBN.

CYCLONE devastated north Queensland towns can expect to be without power for weeks.

Today, 150,000 customers remained without power from Cairns south to the Whitsundays in the wake of monster Cyclone Yasi.

Ergon spokesman John Fowler said repair crews were facing very difficult challenges around the devastated communities of Tully and Cardwell.

"There is a transmission tower knocked down near Cardwell and the damage to our network extending from Cardwell all the way through to Tully is quite extensive," he said.
