It varies, but I think the big companies will usually have a currency arrangement as detailed in their ASX form 'Notification of Dividend / Distribution at question 2A. 10, expanded on in section 2B.
I did have trouble with a Canadian miner from whom I received a cheque in US$. My bank had stopped foreign cheque deposits a few months earlier, so I took it to NAB where I have an account, and it cost me a A$25 fee and I received what I thought was a very unfavourable exchange rate as well.
