"The first successful demonstration of the all-vanadium redox flow battery which employed vanadium in a solution of sulfuric acid in each half was by Maria Skyllas-Kazacos at the University of New South Wales in the 1980s.
The CSIRO, METS, SMS Siemag, TNG developed and are on the cusp of commercializing a high tech refining process with plans to build a refinery in Darwin.
Australia has vast resources of Titanium/Vanadium/Fe Magnetite which this new refining process makes economical, where it was not previously.
Australian companies already have deals with major Vanadium battery manufacturers to produce electrolyte.
Some of these companies have sourced financial backing from overseas Export/Import banks - ie. government backing where new jobs in new industries could be created. This is a mining/mining technology/energy storage industry that some country will claim as their own, it should be an Australian success story however as we've done the groundwork.
It would be good to see significant value adding to Australian mineral resources happening within our shores once again.
Potential is huge - China Added over 34 Gigawatts of Solar PV last year.
This is just one Vanadium battery proposal.
