I haven't read that substitution is a viable option but could be wrong on that count.
With the LME proving unreliable, I imagine there will be some direct buying going on. If so that would be a sellers market!
I remember reading something this morning in relation to the fiasco that buyers wanting physical Nickel are paying a surcharge of something like 10% on the LME price. All-in-all I'm not sure how much confidence we can now place in the published LME price.
Mines with unhedged Nickel will probably do very well, though we may not know how well till the next set of quarterly results. Still, its nice to have a few Nickel shares!
