Nickel, which had sprung to life this week after two years of under-performing, traded up to $18 000, the highest for over 17 years, before settling at $17 855, against $17 700.
The metal is used in the manufacture of stainless steel, and the market was becoming increasingly cautious ahead of end-May labour contract expiries at major producer Inco's facility at Sudbury in Canada and at Falconbridge's Nikkelwerk refinery in Norway.
