cass.....in answering your questions about margin calls....there is not set rule about when margin calls are made. different brokers have different collateral requirements from different stocks. different traders have different equity positions on certain stocks but yes price drops can be precipitous when margin calls come in. i would assume most of the margin calls would have long since been flushed out from people who had held positions at much higher prices than now. of course there will be still be traders buying shares with borrowed money as the market falls. margin calls can also be made when brokers change collateral requirements.
