Niki Savva defends her book which claims Tony Abbott has an affair with Peta Credlin
The author of a book alleging an affair between Tony Abbott and Peta Credlin has brushed off a scathing rebuke from the former PM’s chief of staff.
Journalist Niki Savva has today responded to a backlash from Mr Abbott and Ms Credlin who have both rejected the author's claims.
Ms Savva told
ABC’s Insiders that while the pair may not have been having an affair, their close relationship and the way they conducted themselves was a distraction to the party.
Yesterday Ms Credlin denied allegations she had an affair with Mr Tony Abbott.
In Savva's book, The Road to Ruin, she alleges Tony Abbott was told to sack Ms Credlin because of the perception they were having an affair.
The warning came from Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells on the eve of the February leadership vote last year.
She said politics is about perception, "rightly or wrongly the perception is that you are sleeping with your chief of staff. That's the perception and you need to deal with it."
Ms Credlin denied the claims telling
News Corp Ms Savva never approached her or the former Prime Minister for comment.
"After 16 years in politics, I’ve always made it my practice not to comment on gossip or stories from unnamed sources," she said.
"This book says a lot more about her lack of ethics than it will ever say about me." Mr Abbott also confirmed the author never contacted him for comment regarding her claims which include Ms Credlin feeding him food off her fork.
"I’m not going to rake over old coals and I don’t respond to scurrilous gossip."
