The reason QF staff do not allow passengers to join friends or family in Business Class is not because there is no meal but because the staff are required to "protect the product".

i.e. Imagine how Mr. Jones in 26B feels (after having paid $7000 or so for his ticket)if he becomes aware that the crew have allowed Mary Smith (who has paid for a Y class ticket)to sit in business class, just because her boyfriend/husband has a J class ticket.

The airline of course has to "protect the product", otherwise it would be a free for all. Sorry, but if anyone thinks they are entitled to sit in J class just because they know someone who is sitting there, then that is just plain stupid!
