Houston pipeline company Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMP) may convert an existing natural gas pipeline in the Niobrara shale play to instead transport crude oil to meet soaring production expectations in the next few years.

A Colorado energy analysis firm said it expects new oil production from the Niobrara’s Colorado and Wyoming region to soar 200 percent in five years to nearly 350,000 barrels per day.

KMEP will participate in Battleground Oil Specialty Terminal Co. LLC (Bostco), a joint venture with TransMontaigne Partners LP, to construct, own, and operate a fuel-oil export terminal on the Houston Ship Channel (HSC). Bostco’s initial phase includes building 52 storage tanks with a combined capacity of 6.6 million bbl of residual fuel and other black oils.
