Yes people want to live in the same area but faced with house prices that are not affordable where they are currently living and prices substantially cheaper further out and a number will opt for what is cheaper

Depending of course on how far out and the infrastructure available

Fact is unlike places like New York, Tokyo, London the land in most places in Australia is available, all that is needed is a government the will to open it up.

and the political pressure governments will face from the electorate will so give them the will power to do something or face being thrown out of office.

Lockridge a housing commission area here in Perth my family was faced with having to live in for a few years while I was a teenager was out in the middle of nowhere. We were riding motor bikes and horses and shooting rabbits and kangaroos in the bush at the bottom of the street

crime in the area was through the roof but a lot of people still lived there, because it was cheap.

The area is still a dump but is surrounded by housing estates.
