yes I caught your drift madcabbie. Margin lending tends not to be available on stocks that the bank considers to be too high a risk. the ratio can vary (ie the amount of gearing available) but in general no borrowing at all IMO is a sign that the bank regards the stock as very high risk.
Note I never use gearing, and even if I did I wouldn't consider gearing NMS at the moment!!
