USA. Love the country but I can't fathom the people sometimes. I got into this argument with a few US folks I know and seriously its sometimes like talking to people from another planet.
They genuinely like *genuinely* believe in some weird stuff. Me I went into the conversation believing that the clear and obvious benefits of socialized healthcare could be explained to any semi-intelligent person and that going private non-socialized healthcare was clearly not the right way.
Conversation didn't go that way and it had (to me at least) some odd moments.
This American guy I know is suffering from major, MAJOR sleep deprivation and he's in US now. Anyways he had to go to various doctors and specialists and now a sleep study etc. He was telling me this and how each time its costing him out of his pocket so he's cash poor right now and life's just a bit crappy for the moment.
At which point I do the usual "so unfortunate the US doesn't have socialized healthcare. its a human right and we shuold all pitch in together. Private companies only drive up the costs because they are....private companies. Blame nixon he started it all"
To which he replied (in contrast to his Woe Is Me out of pocket expenses killing me convo from a moment ago) that hell no was he in favour of socialized medicine. Why should I have to pay more in my taxes to take care of some lazy guy who doesnt want to get a job? Work hard and earn your pay and take care of yourself. Nobody should be taking my money so some lazy guy can just coast

Guy clearly can't draw a connection between socialized medicine and how it might help him in his own current plight. Well thats unfair I think he understood that but he still takes the view of "And i'm happy to pay hey I'm sick"
Americans seem to have this bizarre view that their are unnamed and uncounted mystery "lazy people" out there that don't want jobs.
Republicans man. Brainwashed the country.
How could they vote that lot back into Congress and the Senate after the years and YEARS and YEARS going back to Clinton days of just pure OBSTRUCTIONISM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
