No end in sight for Canberra's run of zero or lower overnight lows
Updated 14 July 2018 — 7:19pm
Canberrans woke to a comparatively warm start on Sunday, when the temperature only dropped to minus 4.8 degrees.
That's almost 2 degrees warmer than Saturday, when - for the second time in a week - Canberra set a new low for the year.
After Wednesday's overnight low of minus 6.3 degrees, at the time the coldest morning of the year, Canberra has outdone itself by dropping to minus 6.5 in the early hours of Saturday.
The low was recorded at 5.03am at the Canberra Airport.
While things are expected to warm up a bit - Sunday's forecast top is 11 degrees, about the same as Saturday - the overnight lows are expected to remain at or below zero for the coming week.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Jordan Notara confirmed Saturday's chilly start was the coldest temperature recorded in Canberra this year, adding that a high-pressure system over the territory was causing clear skies and widespread frost.
