Labor have been selecting their candidates based on a variety of criteria with merit or as I prefer to call it, ability to do a half decent/adequate job being a factor in the mix but it would seem not to be a mandatory requirement.
It isn’t even just a Labor thing either, the art of politic today has been overrun with the idea that One must be seen to be doing the right thing not actually doing the right thing, policies and actions must conform to a standard that offends the least amount of people while placating the most with as little friction as possible because they all suffer from panic attacks if there’s potential for media to spin it into a bad position.
Labor are just the standouts, as they’ve had more practice.
