No serious effect from Typhoon Nari
PETALING JAYA: A typhoon currently raging in central Vietnam will not have any serious effect here aside from rough seas along Sabah and Sarawak’s coasts.
A Malaysian Meteorological De- partment (MetMalaysia) spokesman said Typhoon Nari, which moved from the South China Sea to Vietnam, will only have a “minimum impact” on local weather.
“There’s no possibility that the storm is going to move here.
“There’s nothing to worry about,” the spokesman told The Star yesterday.
According to an advisory on the MetMalaysia website, the typhoon was about 1,189km north-east of Kota Baru, Kelantan, and about 532km north-east of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City.
It added that as of 2pm Tuesday, the storm was moving west-south-westwards at a speed of 15kph.
The typhoon may cause strong winds and rough seas off Miri, Labuan and Sabah’s west coast, interior and Kudat.
The spokesman said the storm was expected to dissipate in about 36 hours from yesterday afternoon.
Reuters reported that more than 122,000 people had been evacuated from Vietnam provinces, including Quang Nam, and also Danang city on late Monday.
It was reported that the typhoon hit the Vietnamese coast with speeds of up to 102kph, and that hundreds of homes had been damaged.
In an unrelated matter, MetMalaysia said there was no sign of a tsunami near Sabah following an earthquake that hit the central Philippines yesterday morning.
An e-mail from the department said the earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale hit Mindanao, about 810km from Sandakan, at about 8.12am.
“There are no warnings for a tsunami hitting Malaysian waters,” the department said.
