the answer is - you can't tell anything at all until the day after the trades have gone through.

however, on every day when shares have been bought back the company is obliged to lodge an Appendix 3E notice with ASX prior to the start of trade.

This provides details of the shares bought back on the preceeding trading day as well as the cumulative history of the buyback and how many shares are still available to be bought back.

Look at the MAP app 3E lodged this morning for an example.
