Canberra ACT does have a hybrid electric fire truck, but it's not currently in full operational service. While the truck is capable of operating on electricity for up to two hours, it also has a diesel backup for longer runs, according to the ACT Government. It was delivered in May 2023. However, it has experienced delays, including being pulled from service for repairs and waiting on a part.
Canberra's $1.6M plug-in hybrid truck has yet to attend an emergencywithout diesel-powered back up, but ESA CEO Wayne Phillips says there's more to the story than that.
