    Fact

The villagers of Fiesch were facing a significant threat from the glacier's advance, and they sought to intervene through religious means.

In 1678, residents of the Swiss village of Fiesch began an annual religious procession, praying for the glacier, the Aletsch, to stop its advance. Their village was being overtaken by the glacier, and the procession, which included prayers, chants, and holy water, seemed to work, as the glacier stopped advancing. The procession still takes place annually on July 31st.

    But now...

11 Aug 2012 — After 350 years of praying for smaller glaciers, Alpine pilgrims debut a Vatican-approved ritual for more, not less, ice.
