    The French Revolution and the hardship (lack of bread, bad or no crops) was mostly caused by a volcanic eruption on Iceland

    which caused 2 years of 'no sunshine' in Northern Europe, hence no crops, cold weather, but also the French court was deeply indebted, still paying off the debt incurred by the Sunking, Louis XIV - 1 1/2 generations before, who had was into costly warfare, but also burdened his subjects with debt just generally, but specifically for the building of his palace in Paris "Versailles"
