The fastest sustained sea level rise in recent Earth history occurred between approximately 18,000 and 7,000 years ago, following the last glacial period. During this period, sea levels rose by as much as 45 mm per year on average, though the average rate was around 10 mm per year, according to CoastAdapt. This rise was primarily due to the melting of massive ice sheets that had previously locked up large volumes of water.
