Of courses gases absorb heat, including O an N in the atmosphere. There’s the gas equations, long known.

But where does the heat come from?

From GHG absorbing radiated heat from the surface, and re-radiating it into the atmosphere. O and N don’t do this like GHG.

But, off topic, can anyone explain the inherent atom-level process by which gas molecules absorb heat and increase KE? Gotta be something at quantum level.
