The ALP certainly knows how to blow money. What, no water restrictions before lumbering us with water we don't need to justify this white elephant corruptly awarded desalination plant? Labor thinks voters are dimwitted fools imho.

After a dry summer Victoria has put in its largest-ever order for desalinated water - 125 gigalitres - costing the average household an extra $10.The order will be used to underpin the state's 2019-2020 supply after Melbourne's water storage levels dropped below 55 per cent. The record requirement was first flagged a fortnight ago by Water Minister Lisa Neville. On Monday she confirmed the order, adding that initial plans for 100 gigalitres had been increased after bushfires in and around catchment areas.

"An order of this size is crucial to securing water supply after a dry summer - in conditions like these we need to make sure storages don't reach critically low levels," Ms Neville said in a statement."We do everything we can to minimise the cost to households - but we can't risk a smaller order and see a return to millennium drought conditions.

"The orders could become an annual event if more rain didn't start flowing into catchments, Ms Neville warned.Melbourne's water storages have had below-average inflows in 18 of the past 20 years on top of significant population growth. The state government also recently announced it would pipe water from Melbourne to Geelong over the next three months to bolster supply to the regional city.
