Be careful what you consider to be 'factored into the market' vs what is not factored by the market. The impairment charges as an absoulte figure may be factored in, but if you take these charges as reading deeper into possible problems and cracks that may be appearing in Metcash's model which may affect future earnings, then this is not factored in. Share prices are predominatly driven by future earnings expectations which is why its not surprising that this stock has fallen after the announcement that FY13 growth is expected to be in line with FY12. Clearly the market was expecting more..

The trick to making money on any stock is to try an assess whether or not you think the markets assessment of a future earnings is correct. The reality will always be known later on, and this is when you make or lose money.
