In a statement to the Singapore Stock Exchange, Noble said it had "discontinued discussions" with FMG about taking an equity stake in the company, and suspended talks on an iron ore marketing agreement.
"We had fruitful discussions with the Fortescue team but were unable to reach an agreement with respect to certain elements of various contracts," Noble said. "If at some point in the future we can reach an understanding with regard to marketing their iron ore to China, we would be extremely pleased."
Shares in FMG last traded at $9.41 before the company called a trading halt during morning trade.
