I would suggest you read this PDF, especially page 13, they don't mention metalstorm itself, but I am willing to bet the only way they will ever achieve those future or objective capability ranges, is with metalstorms stacked propellant load tech, if the US could have achieved those ranges using standard technology, then they would already done so and have it in their arsenal already.
On page 13-:
It seems to indicate to me that the 12 gauge range will increase by 2.5 times what they already have with standard tech compared to metalstorm stacked propellant load?
By the way optical fusing is also coming in 12 Gauge
In the 40mm range it also seems to indicate that the same round can fire low velocity, Medium Velocity (3 times the range of L/V) and High Velocity (7 times that of L/V)
Also worth noting is when you compare the standard High Velocity rounds used today which don't incorporate metalstorm tech, it is only three times the range of Low Velocity or the same range as Medium Velocity using stacked propellant loads?
Even though they don't show metalstorm weapons as being used in this PDF, I believe it is metalstorm technology they are talking about, I believe this is where metalstorm are currently looking at incorporating their stacked propellant loads into normal rounds that are fired in weapons like the M203 etc, they say it is only for non lethal, YEAH RIGHT!

NB, just something else to consider about page 13, look at the range of the 66mm MEDUSA rounds compared with the extended range of both medium and high velocity?
What does that tell ya?
