Useful comparison of total costs of power generation alternatives provided by CSIRO and AEMO. The report acknowledges the obvious that existing coal fired power generation is still the least cost, due to sunk costs and competitive fuel costs. Justification for the commitment to coal fired power generation from the 1960's.
The picture is very different for the new generating capacity that will be required to replace aging, inefficient coal plants as well as meet rising demand. Solar and wind have become the least cost alternatives for new power generation in Australia, no matter how the emissions policy risk is accounted for.
In case anyone wondered why Australia's major generators have been investing heavily in renewables, it is explained clearly in the CSIRO/AEMO report.
Turnbull was ahead of the game on this, and the voters knew it.
