Another thought I've just had is that the total buy order is a large one, but there are not enough sell orders at the requested price to fill it, so the buying occurs in drip fashion over a long period so as not start a rally and push the price up, and hopefully enough sellers will appear at the requested price to fill the order. Sounds plausible to me anyway.
