"actually build public housing".
The former successful Minister for Home Affairs, Clare O'Neill, is now the Minister for Housing and yesterday said she would see to the building of 1,000,000 houses in the next 4 years.
Brisbane's population is 2.3m so if you assume 2.3 people per home that equates to 1m homes.
In other words, Ms O'Neill will see to the construction of the total equivalent of another Brisbane over the next 4 years.
She will thus:
- Get the 6 States to force their LGAs to release sufficient land,
- Get the 6 States to build new roads, schools, trains, sewerage systems, water-reticulation, electricity distribution etc all over the place,
- Ensure sufficient concrete, timber, bricks, glass, roof-tiles etc etc will be available for 250,000 new homes each year (starting today),
- Ensure a workforce to build them all (import skilled labour of course),
- and so on.
Unfortunately the gullible public will lap up her good news and when it fails to eventuate they will have forgotten her pronouncement.
(Cynical me: perhaps she'll build 1,000,000 new homes in the ACT where she might have more influence over the ACT government than over the 6 State governments).
