My take away from this story is that your unfortunate roommate/partner was mentally ill, you are not qualified to say that is because she indulged in drugs.
People with demons often turn to drugs to cope, rather than the other way around.
Frankly the fact that dope calmed her enough to stop her beating her child could be considered an endorsement in my opinion.
