Not quite a question of political thoughts required but rather a need to look closer at the problem. First requirement would be to lessen the demand on river systems which supply Melbourne and this could be achieved to a large degree by a combination of education and more importantly encouragement to install water tanks. The decision to pipe water from outside the Melbourne catchments from a primary source that is at a very low level already has very weak arguments in its favour. Since there are no plans to arrest the relentless expansion of Melbourne then the only viable alternative is sea water converted into fresh (tainted I am told).
