I am sure if your house is being broken into while you sleep. Or your car is stolen and wreaked at night. You would want some police on the street.
this is also why the ALP NT parliamentary members would not fill a basketball team.
As for selling things off? The NT ALP government managed to rack up a debt of $11 billion. There are 250,000 in the NT and less than 1/2 of those works full time. The ALP like the ALP in QLD and VIC have completely messed up the finances of the NT either services has to be cut or things sold off. That is inevitable.
