"Invion also is planning to begin initial trials on an inhalable version of the generic asthma medication zafirlukast, a delivery method previously abandoned by pharmaceutical giants AstraZeneca, which markets the drug as Accolate, and Merck, which turned a similar product into the blockbuster drug Singulair.
An inhalable version, Glass said, would allow patients to enjoy the drug's benefits while avoiding its more troubling side effects, which include suicidal thoughts, severe stomach pain and liver problems. An inhalable version also could be combined with inhalable steroids and bronchodilators to create a single, more effective treatment.
"Turning it into an inhalable has proven to be a difficult nut to crack, but we've partnered with a company – which we'll announce very soon – that has formulated it into a dry powder inhaler," he said. "We've already had two companies take a good look at it, and they say sales figures will start with a b."
