Before you get all hot and bothered Thorny - they are probably not going to deport her, rather give her a visitor visa that the Minister will re-new as required. This way if she requires extensive medical treatment at some stage the family will have to pay for it and not the Australian Taxpayer. Happened to a family I know. The family were told by Immigration that the (re-newable) visitor visa was their only option (and it wasn't a done deal) - they had to go through the Immigration procedure - get refused, apply to the Minister for the visitor visa and Immigration would support their case. It has probably happened to dozens if not hundreds of families before. Don't know why there's such a hue and cry....
