The way I read their response/reaction from a psychological point of view is this:

"Oh crap someone in this team has got a big mouth, probably one of the fakers trying to push the price up for the eventual buyer. Get so and so on the phone and get them on the record as having not leaked. Oh crap he's probably asleep at this time in the U.S. Ok I spoke to him swears he said nothing. Ok put out a response saying we don't know anything we might even go bankrupt that'll cool the market".

Pure speculation on my part.
