hi John,
probably getting right away from humour here - but, I have written a lot on this in other forums and papers.
in brief and without explanation
"I just wonder how we are going to keep people employed......"
We aren't - there will, at some stage in the future - be literally no human workers.
"No doubt many new jobs will evolve from all this progress, but I can see many millions left with either no work or menial jobs which can be just as soul-destroying."
That is an issue that society has to face - and the first thing to change is our attitude ------- we have to get around the fact that no work is soul destroying -------- our current beliefs are the problem - we need to live for more than work - it is an idea that has been instilled in us by others benefitting from our labour -- in short - we have been sold the dummy.
"Add to that the cost of social welfare - fewer people working, more people on jobless benefits and aged pensions for instance - and I can see real problems emerging."
We also have to change the thinking ---- if we treat what we presently call social welfare as a problem and a 'cost' - we are done -
it is a mindset. All the language and thinking is old and out of date - or will be in 50 years.
Human existence as we know it and have known it for the last thousands of years is going to be tipped on it's head in the next half century - century ----------- it will require a completely different attitude, mindset and thought process.
The system cannot possibly work the way it has in the past.
I think it is wonderful - the greatest opportunity that man has had since he came out of the branches.
I just hope robots can write good jokes
