Preventive measure in the line of improving the final disposal of waste

The director of Health and Hygiene of the Municipality of Salto, Juan Pablo Cesio, explained the reasons why the commune does not allow to deposit in the landfill the waste coming from the drilling in search of oil and gas in the department.
Indeed, as reported a few days ago, Mayor Andrés Lima decided not to grant permission to the company Schuepbach Energy Uruguay. Cesio informed that this is due "to the volume that can arise from there and to the potentially dangerous material for the environment, which complicates the management of the landfill and could generate unwanted situations against the environment, especially if those muds come from some contamination with chemicals that they use for drilling. " He also commented that the negatives that the municipalities of Tacuarembó and Paysandú issued in the same situation were analyzed, and Salto decided to join that line and not accept sludge, sandstones, stones or other residues from these perforations. Even if the National Directorate of the Environment (DINAMA-MVOTMA) authorized the final disposal of this waste in the landfill, "we do not have the necessary technology so that the materials can be studied before entering the landfill and determine whether or not they have a risk of contamination". Therefore, it is a preventive measure that goes in the line of improving the final disposal of the city's waste.
"We seek to convert that open-air dump into a final disposition friendly with the environment," said the hierarch.
Complementing this information, Fernando González, in charge of Collection and Sweeping, said that although previously the company had been authorized to discharge effluents that were not in contact with hydrocarbons and urban assimilable waste, recently it was decided by the Administration to leave without effect that authorization and prohibit the entry of any type of waste from that work.
"With this we give tranquility to the population and we respond to the statements of neighbors and residents."
In any case, González clarified that the company has not taken waste to the landfill for a long time.
Finally, the Secretary General of the Municipality, Fabián Bochia, said that from this Administration "we consider that the waste that can be generated in the search for oil or gas can not have as final destination the departmental infrastructure and we endorse it in a resolution to give tranquility to the population ".
