Local ads for puppies many cross breeds range anywhere from $2k up - some were asking $5k. In younger days a pure bred Border Collie 8wk old pup cost me $60. Perhaps inflation (maybe some greed built in).
A local older chap loves horses and racing. One of his horses had hurt it's legs and vet fees were in the thousands. Then to add insult to injury another one of his horses just recently kicked him and he is now in a bad way - apart from the physical pain not sure about how much it will cost him in medical fees and whether he'll be able to continue with dealing with horses.
Think I'll just enjoy keep taking photos - perhaps a lacklustre boring habit but only have to feed the camera with batteries and only after reasonable intervals - plus a good (or bad) photo can't hurt - but care sometimes needed taking same.
