Not quite as sinister and manipulative as it may appear.
There are quite a few automated share systems out there, that try to average the buying and selling for the day. As the price rises, small orders follow the rise. and the reverse happens as the price drops.
You often see the small orders going thru that seem to defy logic or commonsense. But I guess the system must work over time.
