Rossing South – Positive Metallurgical Test Work Results
Highlights
• Preliminary comminution results received from Feasibility level metallurgical test work on samples from Rossing South Zone 1.
• Detailed mineralogical analysis of Rossing South Zone 1 and Zone 2 identifies uraninite as the dominant uranium bearing mineral.
• High uranium recoveries expected from an acid leach processing plant.
South Perth, Western Australia – May 6 2009 – Extract Resources (“the Company”) A comprehensive metallurgical test work program based on NQ core from 19 drill holes is in progress with the bulk of the comminution testwork completed. These drill holes provide representative samples along strike and at varying depths of the known extents of uranium mineralisation at Rossing South Zone 1. The results indicate excellent semi autogenous grind (SAG) mill amenability with relatively low SAG mill work index results and consequently, a reduced power demand for a coarse grind size. The SAG mill would be sufficient to crush the Rossing South ore to a coarse grind size (~850 ìm) prior to acid leach and ultimately reduce operating costs. Agitated acid leach testwork has commenced at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation Minerals Division (ANSTO Minerals) with the initial work aimed at determining the optimum grind size. Detailed mineralogical work by QEMSCAN has been completed by an experienced uranium team at the School of Geosciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
Seven samples from Rossing South Zone 1 and Zone 2 were analysed with the following outcomes:
• >92% of the uranium in 5 samples is present as uraninite.
• The remaining 2 samples contain significant uraninite (79% and 48%) and the secondary uranium mineral coffinite (14% and 50%).
• The refractory uranium mineral betafite holds less than 0.2% of all uranium detected and was present in 4 samples.
Based on the mineralogical analysis outcomes and the amenability of uraninite and coffinite to acid leaching it is expected that high acid leach recoveries can be achieved from the Rossing South ore. The negligible occurrence of the refractory mineral betafite reconfirms the favorable uranium mineralogy at Rossing South.
The company is very pleased with these results which support the view that uranium from Rossing South could be recovered by low-cost coarse grind, acid leach processing plant.
Cheers all!
