"Their 'science' is busted in a way that even the hard core 'believers' avoid talking about it. Their only 'hope' is that people are ill informed and ignorant!"

It's all about loss of face. How can they admit that they were sucked in by a crock? Very hard to do. The true believers or "useful idiots" (in Lenins words)
are waking up to the fact that their religion is dying. I would feel sorry for them,
as we all make stupid mistakes, except that they were so arrogant when they had the upper hand.

They are withdrawing from the debate now. I notice that there are only a couple left and there's not much fight in them. Just trying to make an exit with as much grace as possible under the circumstances.
